Transmission Rebuild

The G31 series 5-speed "Snailshell" transmission is a true racing-ready gearbox with a unique shift pattern. Unfortunately it also has a bad reputation for having it's synchronizers wear out, leaving you with gears that grind if you shift too fast. When I bought the car used, 4-years old, shifting into second was touchy if I wasn't careful. It progressively got worse, and finally in the summer/fall of 2003 I rebuilt the gearbox. Click on these links to read the "How-to" articles I wrote on removing the transmission and doing a partial overhaul.

There are a couple of variants of the Snailshell gearbox. While the removal and repair instructions I give are based on my work on a G31.01 transmission, they should also be applicable to other G31 series and the 016.Y & Z transmissions as well.

The parts I replaced during my rebuild are outlined below, and are included in my large list of repair parts if you are interested in the part numbers.

Links to photos of the work are included in the partial overhaul instructions.
